Happy New Year. My name is Jonathan Schottenstein, President of Value City Furniture. Many of you may have seen me on our Value City Furniture Facebook page during several events throughout 2012, one of which was my infamous Presidential Takeover during Presidents’ Day weekend. Over the past year, I’ve enjoyed meeting many of you while I was visiting our Value City Furniture stores. I had the opportunity to speak with you, and I would like to continue communicating directly to you by launching a new blog. We’re calling it the “Jonologue.”

This inaugural edition of the Jonologue hails you from the home offices in Columbus, Ohio. Many of you likely associate Columbus with THE Ohio State University (Go Bucks!), but it also serves as the Ohio state capital, has one of the best zoos in the country, was the destination for the first commercial flight, and is home to both multiple Fortune 500 companies and OSU Professor/Dendrologist Jim Gibson, father of the Canaan Fir, the fastest growing variety of Christmas tree in the country.

Hopefully you enjoyed the holidays with your friends and family. According to my source for smartness, Wikipedia, the word holiday is derived from the notion of a “Holy Day.”  Whether religious or secular, the commonality that makes holidays so spirited and special is tradition.  Here in Columbus we have managed to honor some of our traditions.  In November, we braved the blistery cold and rooted for our Ohio State Buckeyes in the annual renewal of the fierce rivalry with the team up north, as Buckeye fans playfully refer to the University of Michigan.  The game turned out to be quite the contest, and although the Bucks came out on top this year, the Big Blue showed they will be a formidable foe in the foreseeable future.   Like many other cities, Columbus takes its kindling of the city Christmas tree very seriously.  Every year, an Ohio dignitary lights up the 30 foot tree, the Capitol building it stands in front of, and the square it resides in while a gathering of singers, a choir, and a whole cast of holiday characters joined in jubilance.

Last month, we were are also very proud to open our new store on West Broad Street in Columbus, Ohio. Thanks to everyone who made the grand opening so grand. As you can see, there were three generations of Schottensteins who helped cut the ribbon as we officially opened our West Broad Street store. The little guy in the middle is my nephew, and he has an endless supply of energy. He was so thrilled to help cut that ribbon.

Finally, I travel a lot and thought I could mix things up a bit by providing a useful tip in each edition of the Jonologue for those of you that may also find yourselves in the places I venture to.  This morsel, pun intended, provides gastronomic offerings.  When in Columbus, Ohio, check out Harvest Pizza. They have a great array of wood-oven pizzas and other festive fare you can wash down with a tempting selection of beverages and brews.  You can thank the Jonologue later.

On behalf of all us that make up the VCF family, the Jonologue would like to extend all of those that make up your family a Season’s Greetings and a Happy New Year.  Catch you all on the other side of the ball drop!

As I earlier mentioned, I truly enjoyed meeting many of you over the past year. And I am glad we were able to get a few pictures together. I’m looking forward to another great year, and to meeting many of you in 2013!
